Religious affairs minister set to toss ‘yee sang’ at Jakim’s Chinese New Year event this Sunday

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar will participate in a yee sang tossing ceremony at a Chinese New Year celebration organised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) this Sunday.

The event this weekend, set to take place at the Klang Hokkien Association headquarters, is organised in collaboration with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) and other Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

According to a media invitation by Jakim today, the celebration will include a visit to see the elderly and distribution of food aid on Saturday.

On Sunday, the event will feature a forum in the morning, followed by a speech from the minister and the yee sang tossing ceremony.

Also called yu sheng, lou sang or lo hei, the vibrant and colourful raw fish and vegetable salad is a Chinese New Year tradition in Malaysia.

The act of tossing yee sang is a jovial ceremony where families, friends, and colleagues gather to toss the salad with chopsticks to usher in a new year filled with wealth, abundance, and prosperity.
